Short description of the project: With this project Salvation Army strives to support families in need receive health services, children be enrolled and succeed in school through the afterschool programs and young adults receive valuable work-training in order to become employable. The project aims to assist people in filling the gaps that prevent them from liberating themselves from the traps of poverty.

 

Results and impact:

Two community centers were established, one in Iasi and the other in Ploiesti. The centers are coordinated by Salvation Army officers and staffed with doctors and nurses for the medical cabinet, social workers including Roma-mediators, teachers for language and math, service personnel and volunteers. These centers operate in tight collaboration with the local municipalities.

 

The collaboration with the child protection agency and the social assistance authorities entails enrollment of children in school, information about families in need of assistance, liaison between school teachers and Salvation Army teachers regarding the evolution of children at individual level. 

 

One year into the project Salvation Army

  • is working with 47 families in and around Iasi, targeting 50 families.

  • Over 80 children have attended the afterschool program,with an average daily attendance of 30 children.

  • Around 200 treatments have been performed at the center medical cabinet.

  • In Ploiesti, Salvation Army is currently working with 26 families, aiming for 40.

  • Over 80 children have attended the afterschool-program, with an average daily attendance of 22 children.

  • Around 30 children were successfully enrolled and attended the programs into school.

  • Around 50 medical consultations have been done in the center medical cabinet.  

  • In autumn 2015 Salvation Army has opened the first Mobile Health Clinic. A team that consists of a doctor, a social worker and a driver, meets people living on the streets, in the most remote corners of Bucharest, and offers them basic medical treatment.

  • In addition to mobile health clinic, Salvation Army opened a second hand store called SALVATtex, a Romanian twin of the successful Norwegian Fretex.
